How to share your finances with a partner
A couples budgeting app for Canada: invite your partner to a shared space, choose what each of you shares, and let both assistants read the same figures.
Couples in Canada tend to run money from several directions: a joint chequing account at one bank, personal accounts at another, a TFSA each, a credit card for groceries and a spreadsheet that holds it together. A shared space in Era puts the parts you want to share on one page, and leaves the rest where it is.
How do couples share finances in Canada?
Connect your accounts, create a shared space and invite your partner by their Era handle or by email. Each of you then chooses what to share, account by account or by category. You both see the same shared figures for the joint account, the groceries and the bills, and your personal accounts stay personal.
It works with the banks Canadians use, including RBC, TD, Scotiabank, BMO and CIBC, along with credit unions and neobanks.
Can you keep some accounts private?
Yes. Sharing is a choice each person makes for their own accounts, and a "What I share" view lists everything you have put in. One control stops all of your sharing at once. A joint account and a private account for gifts can live side by side without anyone having to explain.
How do you divide bills fairly?
Rent or mortgage, utilities, groceries and daycare can be split inside the space in whatever proportion suits you, such as sixty-forty when one of you earns more. A running ledger shows who owes whom. When an amount is settled, mark it as paid, and if you tapped too soon, undo it.
You can also ask your assistant who owes whom this month and get an answer from the same figures your partner sees.
What does each person's assistant do?
Every member's assistant can help. One of you can ask Claude about the month's spending while the other asks ChatGPT or Gemini, and both answers come from the same shared figures. You do not have to agree on an app, and you do not have to repeat yourselves.
How do you build a household view?
A view is a page of widgets, organized as tabs. Pick a template, such as a household overview or a bills page, and Era previews it with your own figures before you commit. Then drag the widgets into the order you want. Many couples keep one tab for spending, one for bills and one for what is owed.
A financial health tab shows how the household is doing, with the numbers behind each figure. Advice generation is coming soon.
