Connect Meta's Muse to your UK bank accounts
Connect Meta's Muse to your UK bank accounts with a Custom Connector and an Era API key: the request to send, the access to pick, and how to renew or revoke.
If you use Meta's Muse and bank in Britain, you can give it your real balances and transactions without handing it a banking password. Link your accounts in Era through open banking, make an Era API key, and ask Muse to build a connector from Era's API documentation. Muse then answers from the accounts you've linked, whichever UK banks they're with.
Era is an independent company; Muse is made by Meta. This guide is for a reader who already has Muse, and it keeps the Muse side to what you ask it.
How do I connect Muse to my UK bank accounts with Era?
Link your banks in Era, make an API key, and ask Muse to create a Custom Connector from Era's API documentation using that key. Muse then reads your balances and transactions across every account you've linked, from Monzo and Starling to Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and NatWest, using the key and never your banking password.
Link your accounts in Era. Sign up at era.app; the Basic tier is free. Connecting a bank uses a live data connection, a paid feature, and on Basic you can add manual accounts instead. You approve each bank through open banking, in your own banking app. Era connects accounts across the US, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, and 40+ countries in all.
Make an API key for Muse. In Era, open API keys and choose Create key. Name it "Muse".
Choose its access and expiry. Under Scopes, untick every box that ends in
writefor read-only access, and pick the shortest Expiry you're happy to renew. Then choose Create key.Copy the key. Era shows it once, on the Save your API key screen. Choose Copy key.
Ask Muse to build the connector. Send this request:
Create a Custom Connector for Era, my personal finance service. Its API documentation is at https://era.app/docs/era-api. It authenticates with an Era API key sent in the X-API-Key header. I'll give you the key when you ask for it.Give Muse the key when it asks, then check it works: "Using the Era connector, list my accounts with their current balances." If the figures match Era, you're connected.
Which access should I give Muse's key?
Start with read access and the shortest expiry you'll tolerate. If you want Muse to recategorise transactions, tag them, set rules or save things to Era's memory, make a new key with write access. A key acts as your whole Era account, so treat it like a password.
A key's access is fixed when you make it. To give Muse more, make a new key, give it to Muse, then revoke the old one. Era keeps an edit trail, so you can undo any change Muse makes. Reading works on every plan; changing categories, tags and rules needs one of Era's paid tiers, and pricing lists what each includes.
What can Muse do with my money through Era?
Through Era, Muse can answer from your real figures, recategorise and tag transactions, set rules in plain English, find every recurring charge, forecast your cash flow and save what you tell it to memory. Moving money between your own accounts is in private beta, off by default for every key, and every transfer needs your approval.
Requests worth trying:
- "Find every direct debit and subscription across my accounts and total what they cost me each month."
- "Recategorise every Tesco charge this year as groceries."
- "Make a rule that tags anything from Uber or Trainline as commuting."
- "Compare my spending on eating out this month with last month."
A rule Muse creates keeps working between conversations, so next month's transactions arrive already sorted. You can switch a rule off or delete it on the Rules page in Era, and choose Undo all changes to reverse what it did.
Will Muse remember what I told Claude or ChatGPT?
Yes, if they all connect to Era. Era keeps one financial memory, such as your savings goal and spending limits, and every connected assistant reads it. Tell Claude you're saving for a house deposit and Muse knows it the next time you ask. Ask any assistant to forget something and it goes from all of them.
Use Claude and ChatGPT with the same UK accounts shows how the pieces fit together.
What happens when my Era key expires?
Muse's Era connector stops working. Make a fresh key with the same boxes ticked, ask Muse to "update the credentials for my Era connector", and paste the new key when it asks. Then revoke the old key. Revoking a key cuts Muse off from its next request.
You'll find your keys on the API keys page, where the Expires column shows when each one lapses and Revoke sits beside it.
Revoking leaves your bank connections in place for your other assistants. To remove a bank itself, disconnect it in Era, which ends access for every assistant at once.
Can Muse read my payslips and statements?
Yes, once they're in Era's Document Library. Era reads bank statements, payslips, P60s, tax forms and receipts, keeps each value with a citation to its page, and Muse can answer from them through the same connector. Transactions from a statement can also be brought into a manual account.
