What your household's AI assistants remember

Shared memory for AI that your family can use: what a shared household remembers, which assistants read it and exactly who can see and change it, and why.

Most AI memory belongs to one person and one assistant, which is awkward for anything a household does together. In Era, a shared household has a memory of its own, so facts about the household are kept once, stay with the household, and are known to every member's assistant, whichever assistant that member prefers.

What does a household's AI remember?

A shared household remembers the things a household agrees on: how you split the rent, which category the dog's vet bills belong in, what the holiday fund is for, who handles which bills. You tell any connected assistant, ask it to keep the fact for the household, and every member's assistant knows it from then on.

Household memory works alongside your personal memory rather than replacing it. Your own goals and preferences stay in your profile, and the household's facts live with the household.

Who can see what the household remembers?

The members of the household can see it, and the role each person holds decides what they can do. Owners and admins manage the household, contributors can add and change what it remembers, and viewers can read it without changing anything. People who aren't members never see it, and your personal memory isn't visible to the household at all.

You can open the household's memory at any time, read what it holds, correct a fact that's out of date and remove one that no longer applies. When a fact is removed, it's removed for every member's assistant.

Which assistants read it?

Any assistant that connects to Era, including Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, reads the household's memory for the members who connect it. That is the useful part of shared memory in a home where one partner lives in Claude and the other in ChatGPT. Both assistants arrive at the same household facts without either of you repeating them.

What kinds of things are worth remembering?

The facts worth remembering are the ones you would otherwise explain again every time, such as how you split the bills, what a fund is for and who pays what. An assistant that knows them doesn't ask twice, and doesn't give your partner an answer that contradicts yours. Some examples:

  • "We split the rent 60/40 because I earn more."
  • "The holiday fund is for August, and we're adding £300 a month."
  • "Groceries and takeaways both count as food in our budget."
  • "Alex pays the energy bill and we split it on the first of the month."
  • "We're saving for a deposit, and the joint account covers the bills."

How is this different from a shared spreadsheet or notes app?

A spreadsheet holds what someone typed into it, and a notes app holds what someone wrote down. The household's memory is read directly by the assistants you already use, sits beside the household's real figures, and is governed by roles and by what each member shares. It also stays with the household if one assistant is replaced by another.

Can I take back what I've shared?

Yes. Each member has a "What I share" view and a "stop everything" control that withdraws all of their sharing at once. The household keeps facts that members agreed to put there, and anyone with the right role can edit or remove them. If you leave a household, your personal memory stays with you.

How do I start?

Create a shared household, invite your partner or housemates by handle or email, and tell your assistant the first fact you want the household to keep. The household can also hold your shared documents, and the assistant can then answer from those documents too.

Shared documents are described in how to share financial documents with family.
