ChatGPT Finances vs Era: which should you use?
ChatGPT Finances vs Era: what Finances in ChatGPT does inside ChatGPT, and what you gain when every assistant shares one authorised link and one memory.
ChatGPT Finances is a good way to ask ChatGPT about your money, and Era is the way to ask every assistant about it. Finances in ChatGPT links your US accounts inside ChatGPT. Era links your banks once and lets ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Meta's Muse all read them, with one shared memory.
Most people end up using more than one assistant, so this page compares the two on the things that decide it: where your accounts can come from, which assistants can use them, what is remembered, and who holds the connection.
What is ChatGPT Finances?
Finances in ChatGPT is OpenAI's feature for linking your financial accounts to ChatGPT and asking about them in everyday language. It began rolling out to Free and Go users in the US on web, iOS and Android on 2 October 2026. You link accounts through a data network, and ChatGPT answers questions about spending, balances and bills.
It is a neat way into the idea, and it has an obvious shape: it lives in ChatGPT, it covers US accounts, and what you link there is available there. That is a fair trade for someone who uses ChatGPT for everything.
How does Era compare with ChatGPT Finances?
Era works in ChatGPT and in every other assistant. You link your banks once, and Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Meta's Muse and the rest connect to Era. ChatGPT Finances works in ChatGPT only. Era also adds shared memory, financial health, spaces and documents, and it covers accounts in the US, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, and 40+ countries in all.
| ChatGPT Finances | Era | |
|---|---|---|
| Works in | ChatGPT | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Meta's Muse and more |
| Accounts | US accounts linked in ChatGPT | Banks in 40+ countries, plus manual accounts and statement imports |
| Memory | Inside ChatGPT | One memory every connected assistant reads |
| Financial health | Not described | Figures and the analysis behind them |
| Documents | Not described | Statements, payslips and tax forms in the Document Library |
| Sharing | Not described | Shared spaces with a partner or housemates |
| Control | Managed in ChatGPT | One place to revoke any assistant or disconnect a bank |
Which should I use if I only use ChatGPT?
If you only ever use ChatGPT and you bank in the US, Finances in ChatGPT is a fine place to start. If you want your goals, your categories and your documents to be there when you open ChatGPT as well as any other assistant, connect ChatGPT to Era, and you get the same questions answered with more behind them.
You don't have to choose for ever. Era works inside ChatGPT, so you can ask the same everyday questions there and keep the freedom to bring in Claude or Gemini later without linking anything again. Connect ChatGPT to your finances takes a few minutes.
Which should I use if I use several assistants?
Era, because the alternative is to link your accounts again in each assistant and keep track of every link. One connection to Era means you approve each bank once, every assistant sees the same accounts and the same memory, and you can end any assistant's access, or a bank's, in one place.
The effect shows up in small ways. Tell Claude on Monday that you're saving for a deposit, and ChatGPT knows it on Tuesday. Ask Gemini about your financial health and it reads the same figures and analysis as everyone else. File a payslip once in the Document Library and every assistant can cite it.
Is it safe to link my bank to ChatGPT or to Era?
Both use a read-only connection that you approve through your bank's own sign-in, and neither asks for your banking password in a chat. That matches what banks say they will accept. With Era, you also have one list of every assistant that has access, read-only keys with expiry dates, and a single step to revoke any of them.
Banks have been plain that they block agents who sign in with a password, and some now make customers answer for what an agent does. Is it safe to connect your bank to ChatGPT or Claude and who's liable when an AI agent uses your login go through the detail.
What can I ask once Era is connected?
You can ask about balances, spending, your financial health and the analysis behind it, holdings and documents, in whichever assistant you prefer. Era reads the accounts you linked, and your assistant answers from them. Here are a few good first questions to try, and each one is answered from the accounts you have linked:
- "What did I spend on groceries last month, across all my cards?"
- "What is my financial health, and what is pulling it down?"
- "Which subscriptions have I forgotten about?"
- "What does my latest payslip say about tax withheld?"
Moving money between your own accounts is in private beta, off by default for every key, and every transfer needs your approval.
