Settle up with Venmo, Zelle or PayPal in Era
Settle up with roommates and partners using Venmo, Zelle, PayPal or Cash App. Era sees the payment in your bank feed and marks the debt settled for everyone.
Paying a roommate back through Venmo, Zelle, PayPal or Cash App takes a few seconds, and recording that you did so is where it usually goes wrong. In a shared Era space the recording takes care of itself: Era sees the payment in your bank feed and marks the debt settled, so the number everyone sees goes down without anyone typing anything.
How do I settle up with a roommate on Venmo?
Pay your roommate on Venmo the way you always do, and Era notices. When the payment appears in the bank feed, Era matches it to what you owe in the space and marks the debt settled, and Venmo accounts connect to Era too. Era doesn't send the money itself.
The result is that the Who owes whom view changes by itself. Your roommate opens the space and sees the same updated figure you do, with no message asking whether you have paid yet.
Does Era see Zelle payments?
Yes. A Zelle payment leaves the bank account you pay from and shows up in that account's feed like any other transaction, and Era recognises it as a payment between members of your space and marks the matching debt settled. Zelle is a way of paying rather than an account you connect, so Era reads the account behind it.
That makes Zelle a good fit for rent. One person collects the rent, everyone else pays their share by Zelle, and the space shows who has paid and who still owes.
What about PayPal and Cash App?
PayPal and Cash App work in the same way. If a PayPal or Cash App payment moves through an account you have connected, Era sees it in the feed and settles the debt it matches. A payment that sits entirely inside an app you haven't connected is something you can mark as paid yourself in a tap.
What if a payment doesn't match the debt?
You stay in control. If a payment doesn't line up, perhaps because it covers two bills at once or someone rounded it up, you can mark a debt as paid by hand and undo it if you got it wrong, and you can change a split so a debt that moves after the fact is easy to put right.
Because every member sees the same figures, a correction made by one person is visible to everyone straight away.
Who can see my payments?
Only what you choose to share. Each member shares by account or by category, a "What I share" view shows exactly what the others can see, and a "stop everything" control switches off all your sharing in one go. If you'd rather not share the account you pay from, you can mark debts as paid by hand.
Roles decide what people can do inside the space. The owner and admins manage it, contributors add and change things, and viewers can look but not touch.
Can my assistant tell me who still owes what?
Yes. Ask Claude or ChatGPT "who owes whom this month?" and it reads the same shared figures you see. Ask it "has Sam paid me back for the electric bill?" and it checks the space's ledger. Everyone's assistant reads the same numbers, so two housemates never get two different answers.

How do I get started?
Create a shared space, invite your roommates or your partner by handle or email, and share the account you pay rent and bills from. From then on, a payment between you is matched to the debt it settles, and the figure everyone sees moves on its own.
If you are weighing this against a bill-splitting app, Splitwise alternatives for couples and housemates compares them side by side.
Era connects accounts across the US, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, and 40+ countries in all.
