Splitting bills? See who owes whom in one place

Split bills and shared expenses without a spreadsheet: a shared space in Era keeps one ledger of who owes whom, with mark as paid, undo, split and an assistant.

Splitting bills is easy to agree on and surprisingly tiring to keep track of. Someone pays the electric bill, someone else buys the groceries, a third person covers the deposit, and a month later nobody can say who is ahead. A shared space in Era keeps that tally for you, from the transactions that are already in your accounts.

What is the easiest way to see who owes whom?

Put the people involved in one shared space and share the accounts or categories you use for the household. Era reads the transactions, keeps a running ledger of who has covered what, and shows who owes whom on a single tile. You do not enter anything twice, and you do not keep a spreadsheet.

The ledger is built from the same transactions everyone already sees, so there is nothing to argue about. If the figure looks wrong, you can open the transactions behind it.

How does a split work?

Open any transaction in the space and split it between members, evenly or in whatever proportion suits you: half each for the internet bill, sixty-forty for rent, or only between the two of three housemates who ate the takeaway. The split updates the ledger straight away, and everyone in the space sees the same figure.

You can split a shared expense after the fact as well. If you paid for the whole holiday cottage on your card, you split it once it is on the statement.

How do you mark something as paid, and undo it?

When someone pays what they owe, mark the amount as paid and the ledger clears it. If you marked the wrong line, or the transfer has not gone through yet, undo it and the amount returns to the tile exactly as it was. Nothing is deleted along the way, so the history stays honest.

Many people settle in a payment app and then mark it paid here. Era keeps the ledger of who owes whom, and you choose the way the money moves.

Who can see what?

Everyone in the space sees the same shared figures, which is what makes the ledger trustworthy. Each member chooses what to share, by account or by category, and a "What I share" view lists it all. Anything you have not shared never enters the tally, and one control stops all of your sharing at once.

Roles keep it tidy as well: owners and admins manage the space, contributors add what they share, and viewers can look without changing anything.

Can your assistant answer "who owes whom this month?"

Yes. Every member's assistant can answer from the same shared figures, so you can ask Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini who owes whom this month, what the groceries came to, or whether the rent split has been settled. Each housemate uses the assistant they prefer and gets the same answer.

That is the part a standalone splitting app cannot do: your money, your shared figures and your assistant are in one place.

Beyond the split

Once the ledger works, a space also gives you a view for the household with its bills, its spending and its trends, and a place for the documents everyone needs, like the lease.
