YNAB MCP server: your options for Claude (2026)
YNAB MCP server options for Claude: how the community servers use your YNAB API key, what they can do, and how Era adds every account and every assistant.
YNAB has a public API but no official MCP server, so people who want Claude or another assistant to read their budget turn to community projects. This page explains your options, how they connect with your YNAB API key, and how Era gives the same assistants a wider view of your money.
Is there a YNAB MCP server?
There is no official YNAB MCP server at the time of writing, but the community has built several. They connect an assistant such as Claude to your YNAB account through YNAB's public API and your personal access token, so the assistant can read budgets and transactions and, in some cases, make changes.
Because they are community projects, quality, upkeep and features vary. The next section lists the best-known ones.
Which community YNAB MCP servers are there?
Several community servers exist on GitHub, and you can use any of them with Claude or another MCP client. Each one wraps YNAB's API and offers a slightly different mix of reading, reporting and editing, so it is worth skimming the list before you pick one.
- calebl/ynab-mcp-server: a TypeScript server for reading and managing budgets, and one of the most widely used.
- oliverames/ynab-mcp-server: aims for full coverage of YNAB's API, including accounts, categories, goals and reports.
- jsclayton/ynab-mcp: focuses on spending analysis, guided reconciliation and budget management in conversation.
- dizzlkheinz/ynab-mcpb: built around reconciling bank statements, itemizing receipts and managing transactions.
- rollecode/ynab-mcp-server: connects Claude Code or any MCP client to read budgets and track spending.
Because they run on your machine or in your own setup, read the source code before you connect one, and keep your token out of shared places.
How do I get a YNAB API key?
You create a personal access token in YNAB's account settings, under the developer section. You give that token to the MCP server, usually as an environment variable in your assistant's configuration, and the server uses it to call YNAB on your behalf. Treat it like a password, because it can reach your budget.
You can revoke the token in YNAB at any time, which cuts off every server using it. If you try several servers, give each its own token so you can end one without touching the others.
What can an assistant do with a YNAB MCP server?
With a community server, Claude can answer questions about your budget, summarize category spending, find unusual transactions and help you reconcile an account. Some servers also let it categorise or create transactions, which is worth approving carefully, since YNAB's method relies on your own choices.
Everything the assistant sees comes from YNAB, so it knows your budget and the accounts YNAB syncs, and nothing else. It has no wider memory of your goals, documents or accounts outside YNAB.
How is Era different from a YNAB MCP server?
Era is an MCP server for your whole financial picture. It links your banks across the US, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Spain and 40+ countries in all, adds your financial health figures and the analysis behind them, files your statements, payslips and tax forms in the Document Library, and shares a memory across Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Meta's Muse.
You don't have to choose. If you love YNAB's method, keep budgeting in YNAB, add a community server if you want an assistant inside your budget, and connect Era for everything around it. Era's connection is one URL, and any change an assistant proposes waits for your approval. What MCP is and what Era is explain the background.
Can I use YNAB and Era together?
Yes. The same bank can feed both, and Era can bring in a YNAB export through a CSV import or the Document Library so that your history sits alongside your live accounts. Many people keep YNAB as the place where they make decisions and use Era as the place their assistants ask questions.
If you'd rather replace YNAB, YNAB alternatives compares the options, and how developers use Era Context shows what the MCP connection looks like in practice.
