Organize your tax documents with AI (2026)

Organize tax documents with AI: drop in your W-2, 1099s and receipts, and Era reads each one, files it under your own tags and answers from it in any assistant.

You can organize your tax documents with AI by adding your W-2, 1099s and receipts to Era's Document Library. Era reads each form, keeps the box or line each value came from, and files it under your own tags, so Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini can answer "what do I still need?" from the actual paper.

How do you organize tax documents with AI?

Start with a tag for the tax year, then upload each document by link as it arrives. Era identifies the kind, reads its values and cites the page and snippet, and your assistant can tell you what is in the pile and what is missing before you sit down with your return.

The filing season for the 2026 tax year opens in early 2027, and the IRS says where to start at irs.gov. The documents arrive one at a time over weeks, and a library that reads them as they come means the pile builds itself. When the last form lands, the organizing is already done.

Which tax documents can Era read?

Era reads tax forms as a document kind, which covers the W-2 and the 1099 family, and it also reads the documents that sit around a return: bank and investment statements, pay stubs, receipts, invoices and bills. Anything you would otherwise photograph and lose in a camera roll belongs in the library.

For each form your assistant can report the payer, the amounts and the tax year, and it can compare totals across forms. A prompt such as "Use Era. List every 1099 I've uploaded for 2026 with the payer and the amount" gives you a checklist you can hand to a preparer.

How do you find what is missing?

Ask your assistant to compare what you have with what you expect. Because Era also holds your accounts and your history, it can notice that interest was paid by an account that has no 1099 in the library, or that a client who paid you last year hasn't sent a form this year.

Use Era. Which accounts earned interest or dividends in 2026, and do I have a form for each one?

Use Era. Which clients paid me more than $600 this year, and have I uploaded a 1099 from each?

The answers come from your transactions and your documents together, which is the whole point of keeping both in one place.

Can you keep receipts for deductions beside the forms?

Yes. Upload receipts and invoices the same way, tag them with the tax year, and Era reads the merchant, date and total. At filing time you ask for every receipt under a tag, grouped by what it was for, and you hand a preparer a clean list with the paper behind each line.

If you work for yourself, keep receipts and invoices organized with AI goes further. A receipt that reaches the library the week you bought it is one you never have to reconstruct in April.

Can you share tax documents with a preparer or a spouse?

Yes. Put the year's documents in a shared space with your spouse, or send a preparer a share link. The link opens only for a signed-in Era user and expires after the lifetime you choose, so the access ends when the work does. You can revoke it at any point.

Your assistants can also read the library, so a question to Claude and a question to ChatGPT get the same answer from the same forms. Facts you promote, such as your filing status or a dependent, join Era's memory. See pricing for what each tier holds.
